Paint Advice

The following advice was received from Ownerships on how to deal with repairs to the paintwork. I believe that it originates from Malcolm Lane.

PENDEFORD

INTERNATIONAL PAINT: Flag Blue, Rochelle Red, Cream, Black.
(note: we can't be certain that these are the correct colours, due to the fact that the boat has now been repainted)

Chips in paint: If down to steel abrade gently with 400 grade, wet & dry paper. Clean, then apply Hamerite anti rust primer. Dab enough on area to fill chipped area & a little over surrounding paintwork. If this doesn't bring area to the height of surrounding paintwork, then when primer is dry dab in some undercoat - to the correct top coat colour. When area is of correct height then abrade with 800 grade wet & dry paper (do this with wood block until area chipped is level with previous paintwork). Then sand down whole of area with wet & dry. When dry paint whole area (if only affected area is treated, touch in with paint, flcking brush up & down to ensure drips aren't easily made). Working in paint well, & brushing from bottom to top to ensure even distribution of paint. One coat should be sufficient.

The above also applies to gunwales black gloss (make sure it is gloss paint - not blacking). The only difference being larger areas are likely to have occurred and may need scraping - loose paint & rusty areas - with a scraper prior to wet & drying with 400 paper.

A cheap paintbrush is just that & will not apply paint in the correct manner. Do not get a paint brush which boasts no loss of bristles - all brushes shed. A good indication of quality isn't cost, Hamilton perfection brushes are the best. A 1 and a half inch brush (cost £4) will probably be needed if only doing affected areas. For whole areas a 2 and a half inch brush (cost £17). Clean thoroughly afterwards in brush cleaner (Wicks 2 litre £4.50).

Depending upon time of year you can get quite a good atmosphere in which to paint (April - September)(10am - 4pm). Do not paint in rain, fog, frost, damp. Temperatures over 25 or below 5. Do not paint with sun directly on boat.

Drying time of paint depends on temperature, but this can be changed by adding accelerator (a quickening agent) or Owatrol (a slowing agent). If cold you will need a quickening agent. If hot you will need a slowing agent, both of which can be obtained from professional paint shops.

Note: International paints are not the only paints, but in my opinion they are the best & friendliest. They are the ones I use, but they may not be cost effective.

GOOD LUCK
